York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills Book 14--Indentures 19 March 1710/11 This Indenture made the fifth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & ten Between Justinian Best of the Parish of Bruton in the County of York in the Colony of Virga: Labourer of the one part & Stephen Thomson of the same parish & County Esqr of the other part Witnesseth that whereas the said Justinian's time by Indenture for service in this Colony is Expired and also whereas the sd. Stephens has discharged him the sd. Justinian from all manner of Service due to him the said Stephens by Indenture or otherwise) the sd. Justinian doth hereby (in Consideracon of the yearly sallary or wages & other Covenants by the sd. Stephens to be paid & performed) Covenant & agree to Serve the said Stephens or assignes for the Space of one whole year from the twenty sixth day of Febry 1710/11 (that being the day his Indented time Expired) & that he will obey his said Masters Lawfull Comands in all Cases dureing the said time and also his Masters assignes or the wife of his said Master Provided the said Justinian be not obleiged or Comanded to hoe or work in the ground but in absolute necessity (of a Seaon or Such like Cases of Exigency) yet never- theless work in the Garden, & for the performance of the said Service the said Stephens doth hereby Covenant for himself & his assignes to pay unto the said Justinian or his assignes the full sum of three pounds sterl at the Expiracon of the abovemenconed term of One year, and also dureing the said term to find the said Justinian meat drink washing & Lodging & such suitable apparell as is proper for a waiting man (not made into Livery) for the true per- formance whereof in Relation to Service paying of wages & all the above mencioned Covenants the partys to these presents do Each of them singly & by themselves a part bind Each other their Execrs: admrs: & assinges to Each other their Execrs: & admrs: in the penall sum of twenty pounds sterl to be paid upon nonperformance of the said Covenants In Wittness whereof the partys abovenamed to these presents have interchangeably put their hands & seals this day & year above written Justinian Best (seale) Sealed & delivered in the prsence of John Brodnax And acknowledged before me Richd: Bland one of her Majtys Justices of the peace for the County of York R Bland At a Court held for York County March the 19th 1710 Justinian Best acknowledged this Indenture in Open Court & it was admitted to Record Test Phi: Lightfoot Cl Cur Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (14) 76. 16 July 1711 This Indenture made this 16th: day of July Anno. Dom 1711 Between Robert Buce Son of Jno Buce late of the parish of York Hampton & County of York deced of the one part & Thomas Buce of the sd: Parish & County of the other part Wittnesseth that the said Robert Buce of the age of fourteen years for & in Consideracon of the Benefitts & Covenants by the sd: Thomas to be performed & paid) hath hereby Voluntarily Covenanted & agreed to Serve the sd: Thomas Buce or assignes untill he attain to the age of twenty one years & that he will obey his sd: masters Lawfull Comands in all Cases dureing the sd. time as also his Masters assignes (Provided the said Robert be not turned over to any other than such as he shall approve of or the Son or daughter of the sd: Thomas) and for the performance of the sd. Service the sd. Thomas doth hereby Covenant for himself & his assignes dureing the said time that he & they find the sd: Robert sufficient drink Washing Lodging & Cloathing & will give & allow the said Robert two years Schooling at least & that the sd: Thomas or assignes will also at the Expiracon of his term of Servitude find & give unto the said Robert a good suit of apparell (that is to say) One felt hatt one Coat & Westcoat & britches two Shirts one pair of Stockings & one pair of Shoes & a Cow of five yeers old & a Calf by her side In Wittness whereof the partys to these presents have Sett their hands & seales this 16th day of July 1711 Robert Buce 1711 (Seal) his Thos: Buce (Seal) mark At a Court held for York County July the 16th: 1711 This Indenture was acknowledged in Court by the partys thereto & admitted to Record Test Phi: Lightfoot Cl Cur Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (14) 102-103. 17 September 1711 This Indenture made the Sixteenth day of July in the year of our Lord 1711 Between Owen Morris of the Parish of Bruton in the County of York by & with the Consent & approbacon of the Court of York County of the one part & Thomas Whitby of the Parish of York Hampton in the County aforesd: Carpenter of the other part Wittnesseth that the sd. Owen Morris being now an Orphan & willing and desirous to be Instructed in a trade whereby he may be able to Support himself when he comes to years of discretion hath freely & Voluntarily & with the Consent & approbacon of the sd: Court of York hath putt himself apprentice to the sd: Thomas Whitby, the Science or trade of a Carpenter wch: he the said Thomas now useth to be taught & with him after the manner of an Apprentice dwell & Serve from the day of the Date of these presents unto the full End & term of Seven years thence next comeing & fully to be Compleat & Ended by all wch: term the said apprentice the aforesd: Thos: Whitby shall well & truely Serve his Secrets keep, his commands Lawfull & honest every where obey, hurt to his master he Shall not do nor Suffer to be done but shall prevent the Same as much as lyes in his power or Else imediately advertise his sd: Master thereof, the goods of his sd: Mater he Shall not inordinately waste nor them to any body Lend nor from the Service of his said Master he shall not at any time, absent himself without his Special leave but in all things as a good & faithfull apprentice shall bear & behave himself towards his sd: Master and all his dureing the time aforesd: And the said Thomas Whitby on his part doth Covenant promise & agree to & with the said Owen Morris that he the sd: Thomas the said Owen his apprentice the art of Trade which he the said Thomas now useth shall well and truely teach & inform or cause to be taught or performed the best way he may or can & also Shall find & provide for his said apprentice meat, drink, bedding, & apparrell & all other necessa -rys meet & Convenient for such an apprentice dureing the time aforesaid & at the Expiracon of the sd. apprenticeship to pay unto him what the Laws of this Colony have appointed to be paid unto Servts: bound by Indenture & further to give unto the said Owen Carpenters tools to the Value of Six pounds In Wittness whereof both the said partys to this present Indenture their hands & seals have putt the day & year first above written his Owen Morris (Seale) mark Thomas Whitby (Seale) Signed Sealed & delivered in the presence of Phi: Lightfoot Matt. Test Phi Lightfoot Cl Cur Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (14) 112. 17 December 1711 Upon the application of Martha Kaidee in behalf of her Self & her husband Wiliam Kaidee that the Court would order & direct the binding to them By Indenture Lydia (her Goddaughter an Infant) the daughter of Henry & Rebecca Dyer It is therefore ordered that the sd: Willm Kaidee & Martha his wife carry the sd Lydia Dyer before some Justice of the peace of the County who is desired & Impowered to bind her to Serve them the sd: William & Martha & none other untill She attains the age of Eighteen years or day of Marryage, & in Consideracon thereof they the sd: William & Martha or either of them is to find & provide her sufficient meat drink Washing Lodgeing & Cloathing dureing the sd: term instruct or cause her to be instructed in Reading & writeing & other necessary qualifications proper for the female Sex as Sewing Spining & knitting the said Lydia Dyer being so bound as aforesd: is ordered to Serve her sd: Master & Mistriss accordingly Source: York County Deeds, Orders, and Wills (14) 121. 16 January 1715/6 Robert Holderness before the Court promises and obliges himself faithfully to Serve Henry Gill his present master the term of one year after his time by Indenture or Custom is expired in Consideration of mony laid out upon his request.
